BMW India EV penetration

BMW India has made significant strides in the electric vehicle (EV) market, with its EV penetration jumping to 21% in 2025, up from 8% in 2024. This remarkable growth underscores the increasing demand for luxury electric vehicles in India and highlights BMW’s leadership in the segment, even as Tesla continues to challenge market dynamics.

A Growing Demand for Luxury EVs

The company’s electric vehicle sales growth is driven by the popularity of models like the BMW iX1, which saw strong customer reception in 2025. Hardeep Singh Brar, President and CEO of BMW Group India, highlighted the shift in consumer preferences toward EVs in the premium vehicle segment. He stated, “At BMW, we moved from 8% to 21% penetration in 2025—such a significant jump is rare in the luxury market.”

This surge reflects a broader trend where EV adoption in India’s premium segment is accelerating. As the market matures, BMW’s impressive penetration rate sets a new standard for luxury electric vehicles in the country.

Record Car Sales and Profitability on the Horizon

BMW India also achieved record car sales in 2025, with 18,001 vehicles sold, marking a 14% year-on-year increase. This includes 17,271 BMW units and 730 MINI vehicles. Additionally, BMW Motorrad sold 5,841 motorcycles. This surge in sales has paved the way for BMW India to likely post its first-ever quarterly profit by the end of Q4 2025, as higher-margin models like the iX1 improved vehicle gross margins to an estimated 18%.

Dominating the Luxury EV Market

BMW India holds a commanding 60% market share in the premium electric vehicle segment. In 2025, the company captured 65% of the total luxury EV market, with 5,116 units sold. BMW’s strong foothold in the sector makes it the top luxury electric vehicle manufacturer in India, ahead of competitors like Tesla.

Looking to the Future: India’s Role in BMW’s Global Strategy

As BMW India celebrates its successes, it continues to target growth within BMW’s global network. Brar shared that India has now broken into the top 20 markets for the brand and aims to reach the top 15 by the end of this decade. The country’s expanding luxury car market makes it a key focus for BMW, with strong attention from the company’s headquarters in Munich.
