DeepSeek AI adoption

DeepSeek, a Chinese tech startup and rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is gaining significant traction in developing nations, helping to narrow the AI adoption gap with more advanced economies. According to a Microsoft report released on January 8, 2026, DeepSeek’s open-source and affordable AI tools are being widely adopted in regions where Western AI platforms have struggled to gain foothold.

How DeepSeek is Narrowing the AI Gap

Microsoft’s report highlights that global adoption of generative AI tools reached 16.3% of the world’s population in the three months leading to December 2025. However, the divide between advanced and developing economies in terms of AI adoption continues to grow. Developed countries have seen faster growth, but the report notes that DeepSeek has successfully reached markets where price-sensitive regions and access issues have limited AI tool availability.

The rise of DeepSeek is attributed to its free-to-use chatbot and the company’s willingness to allow developers worldwide to modify and build on its core engine. Its open-source nature and affordability have lowered the entry barrier for millions of users in developing countries, where AI tools from major Western companies are often inaccessible due to costs or restrictions.

DeepSeek’s Global Reach

While DeepSeek’s market share remains low in North America and Europe, it has seen explosive growth in regions like China, Russia, Iran, and Cuba, where Western services face limitations. The Chinese market, where DeepSeek has reached 89% of the market, remains its strongest, with significant penetration in countries such as Belarus, Syria, and Ethiopia.

DeepSeek’s widespread adoption in China and other countries can be linked to its integration with phones produced by Chinese tech giants like Huawei, which helped it become a default chatbot on widely available devices.

Geopolitical Influence of Open-Source AI

The Microsoft report underscores that open-source AI platforms like DeepSeek have become more than just a technological tool. In many countries with restricted access to Western platforms, DeepSeek has acted as a geopolitical instrument, strengthening China’s influence in regions where U.S. tech companies are limited.

As China asserts its dominance in AI technology, DeepSeek’s growing market share signifies a shift in global tech dynamics, especially in nations previously underserved by the dominant AI providers.

The Future of AI Adoption

DeepSeek’s rise in developing nations signals a broader trend in the global AI market—one that is shaped by accessibility, affordability, and geopolitical considerations. As China continues to expand its influence in AI technology, DeepSeek’s AI adoption in price-sensitive markets is poised to reshape the future of AI and its global reach, offering a more inclusive alternative to traditional Western platforms.
