Cameroon Mourns Opposition Icon Anicet Ekane After Detention Death

Anicet Ekane death

Shock and anger are spreading across Cameroon after the Anicet Ekane death was confirmed by his lawyers and political party. Ekane, a 74-year-old left-wing leader and long-time critic of President Paul Biya’s government, died in custody five weeks after his arrest. His supporters say the circumstances surrounding his final days raise serious questions about political repression and mistreatment.

Ekane was among the leaders of a coalition that backed Issa Tchiroma Bakary in October’s presidential election. Bakary insists he was the rightful winner despite official results handing victory to Biya, Cameroon’s 92-year-old leader who has ruled for more than four decades. Bakary fled to The Gambia shortly after the election, citing threats to his safety.

Unanswered Questions Surround the Anicet Ekane Death

Ekane’s family and lawyers say they received no clear explanation from authorities. His wife was called to the military medical centre where he had been transferred over the weekend, only to be shown his body without further details. His party, Manidem, alleges he was denied access to essential medication — claims the government denies.

A defence ministry spokesman acknowledged that Ekane had chronic health conditions and was being treated by both military doctors and his personal physicians. The government has launched an investigation into the precise circumstances of his death, while offering condolences to his family.

Political Reactions to the Anicet Ekane Death

Prominent anti-corruption lawyer Akere Muna described Ekane as a “fierce and passionate flame” who fought tirelessly for democracy. Muna said Ekane’s deteriorating health was known to authorities, adding that his continued detention ignored “basic humanity” and the presumption of innocence.

Ekane had been accused of inciting revolt, hostility against the state, and calling for insurrection — charges his lawyers say were never formally presented before a judge. His party calls his arrest and detention “illegal”.

Rumours of Ekane’s deteriorating condition had circulated for weeks, prompting supporters to demand proof he was still alive. Following news of his death, crowds gathered at Manidem headquarters in Douala, while others expressed grief and outrage on social media. The party says its premises have now been surrounded by security forces.

Cameroon Faces Political Tensions After Anicet Ekane Death

Ekane’s death comes amid heightened tensions after the contested election. The UN reported at least 48 deaths during protests against Biya’s re-election, including several shot in Garoua near Bakary’s home. The government denies any wrongdoing.

Ekane initially backed opposition figure Maurice Kamto, whose candidacy was rejected after electoral authorities claimed his party endorsed multiple candidates. This led Ekane and others to form the Union for Change Coalition, which chose Bakary as its presidential candidate.

As the Anicet Ekane death triggers national grief and political unrest, many fear Cameroon is entering a dangerous chapter marked by deepening repression and diminishing space for dissent.
