Deezer AI music detection

In a bid to address the rising issue of AI-generated music flooding streaming platforms, Deezer has introduced an AI detection tool aimed at promoting transparency and protecting human artists. The tool, which was launched last year, tags fully AI-generated music to help listeners identify it, and importantly, removes such tracks from Deezer’s algorithmic and editorial recommendations.

This move comes at a time when the music industry is facing growing concerns over AI-generated content being used to manipulate streaming systems. Deezer’s tool is designed not only to flag AI tracks but also to exclude them from monetization and the royalty pool, ensuring that artists receive fair compensation for their work.

AI Music Detection Tool: Enhancing Transparency

The AI detection tool has proven highly effective, with Deezer reporting an impressive 99.8% accuracy. This tool is capable of detecting AI-generated music from major generative models like Suno and Udio, which are behind many of the tracks making their way into the streaming space.

Deezer’s initiative comes as the service experiences an alarming rise in AI-generated content. The platform now receives 60,000 AI-generated tracks daily, a dramatic increase from the 20,000 tracks it was receiving just last year. What’s even more concerning is that 85% of these tracks are deemed fraudulent, representing a significant threat to the integrity of music streaming services.

Promoting Fairness and Efficiency in the Music Industry

Deezer’s decision to make its AI detection tool available to other streaming platforms sets a positive precedent for the music industry. By sharing this tool, Deezer aims to curb the manipulation of music streaming services and ensure that human artists continue to receive the recognition and compensation they deserve.

AI-generated music, while innovative, raises significant concerns, especially when it comes to the use of copyrighted material to train AI models. This issue was highlighted in 2024 when a North Carolina musician was charged by the Department of Justice for creating AI songs and manipulating streams to claim millions of dollars in stolen royalties.

Industry Response to AI-Generated Music

Deezer’s move contrasts with other industry players like Bandcamp, which has opted to ban AI-generated music altogether. Streaming giant Spotify has also updated its policies to tackle AI-generated content, placing stricter regulations on how AI can be used in music production. Meanwhile, record labels such as Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group have reached agreements with AI companies like Suno and Udio, licensing their music catalogs and ensuring proper compensation for the artists whose work is being used to train these models.

Setting a Precedent for the Industry

Deezer’s AI music detection tool is a significant step in ensuring that the music streaming industry remains fair and transparent. As Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier highlighted, there has been considerable interest from other companies, with several successfully testing the tool already. This opens the door for other platforms to follow suit and adopt similar measures to protect artists and combat fraud.

By taking proactive steps to curb AI-generated content and promoting transparency, Deezer is setting a powerful example in the music streaming world. As the use of AI continues to grow, the company’s commitment to fairness in music distribution remains a crucial part of its strategy.
