The technology is designed to detect faults in overhead line equipment as they develop. Instead of waiting for problems to cause disruption, delays or safety risks, the system gives rail engineers earlier access to useful condition data.

WeWalk, a London-based assistive technology company, is also among the MacRobert Award finalists for its smart cane designed for blind and low-vision people.

The WeWalk Smart Cane was developed with input from the Royal National Institute of Blind People, Imperial College London and members of the visually impaired community. That user-led approach is central to the product’s purpose.

The cane uses sound and vibration to warn users about obstacles. It can also help with navigation, directions and public transport information, including identifying approaching buses. The goal is not only to add technology to a traditional white cane, but to make daily movement safer, easier and more confident.

Oxford Nanopore Advances Real-Time Genomic Sequencing

Oxford Nanopore Technologies completes the 2026 shortlist with a genomic sequencing platform designed to read DNA and RNA directly and in real time.

The company’s technology is used in high-throughput laboratories, disease outbreak sites and even on the International Space Station. Its strength lies in speed, portability and the ability to generate rich biological information without waiting for long processing cycles.

Real-time sequencing can support research, public health, environmental monitoring and healthcare decision-making. In disease outbreaks, faster genomic insight can help scientists understand how pathogens are spreading. In research settings, the same technology can open new ways to study biology at scale.
