Ubisoft Co-Founder Claude Guillemot has died in a plane crash in western France, marking a major loss for the global video game industry and one of Europe’s most influential gaming families.

The 69-year-old entrepreneur was among two people killed after a twin-engine aircraft crashed into a field near La Baule, a coastal town in western France. The crash happened on Friday evening as the plane was approaching a local airfield.

Authorities said the aircraft had taken off from Rennes, where Guillemot lived. Prosecutors said he owned the plane, although they did not immediately provide full official identification of the victims.

Ubisoft later confirmed Guillemot’s death, saying the company had learned the news with great sadness.

Ubisoft Co-Founder Helped Build a Gaming Giant

Claude Guillemot was one of the brothers who co-founded Ubisoft in 1986. The company later became one of the most recognized names in global gaming.

Ubisoft is best known for major franchises such as Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Just Dance, Watch Dogs and Tom Clancy’s gaming series.

The company grew from a French family business into an international publisher with studios and operations across several continents.

For many players, Ubisoft helped define modern action-adventure gaming, open-world design and story-driven blockbuster releases.

France Opens Investigation Into the Crash

French authorities have opened an investigation on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter.

The exact cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, flight path, weather conditions and communications before the crash.

The plane came down in a field while nearing the airfield at La Baule. No confirmed explanation has been released on whether the aircraft suffered a technical fault, pilot difficulty or another issue during approach.

Tributes Follow Death of Ubisoft Co-Founder

Tributes quickly followed after news of Guillemot’s death emerged.

Anne Le Henanff, France’s junior minister for artificial intelligence and digital affairs, described him as one of the pioneers of the French video game industry.

His death is being felt beyond Ubisoft because the Guillemot family played a central role in building France’s reputation as a major force in gaming and interactive entertainment.

Claude Guillemot also served as head of Guillemot Corporation, a company involved in gaming accessories and related technology products.

A Major Loss for the Gaming Industry

The death of the Ubisoft Co-Founder comes at a time when the gaming industry continues to expand across entertainment, technology and digital culture.

Ubisoft remains one of France’s most important creative technology companies, with its games reaching millions of players worldwide.

Claude Guillemot’s role in the company’s early foundation helped shape a business that became part of global gaming history.

His passing leaves a significant mark on the industry, especially in France, where Ubisoft remains one of the country’s best-known technology and entertainment exports.

Final Takeaway

Ubisoft Co-Founder Claude Guillemot’s death in a France plane crash has shocked the gaming world and renewed attention on his role in building one of the industry’s most successful companies.

As investigators work to determine the cause of the crash, tributes continue to recognize Guillemot as a pioneer whose work helped turn Ubisoft into a global gaming powerhouse.
