AI-Generated Court Letter Alleged in Alabama Drug Trafficking Case

AI-generated court letter

Alabama prosecutors say an AI-generated court letter was submitted to support a spa owner’s request to travel outside the state while she awaits trial on drug trafficking, forgery and other charges.

Whitney LeAnn Cheatham, a former business owner in Cullman, asked a court to change the conditions of her bond so she could attend what her lawyers described as a professional development and networking event in Nashville, Tennessee.

Prosecutors opposed the request, arguing that Cheatham poses a flight risk. They also claimed that the invitation letter provided as evidence was fabricated and produced using artificial intelligence.

Cheatham has not been convicted, and the allegations against her remain subject to court proceedings.

AI-Generated Court Letter Raises Questions

Cheatham’s attorneys filed a motion on July 31 seeking permission for her to travel from Alabama to Nashville between August 6 and August 10, 2026.

The filing described her as a content creator and said the trip was connected to her work.

However, prosecutors challenged the supporting invitation. They said the document referred only to an organization called “Content House” and did not include common verification details such as a business address, telephone number, email address, date or signature.

The letter also reportedly lacked information about the event venue, accommodation, registration or schedule.

According to the prosecution’s filing, the document was analyzed using Pangram, an AI-detection service. Prosecutors said the service identified the entire letter as AI-generated.

AI detection tools can produce uncertain results, meaning their findings may require additional evidence and judicial review.

Prosecutors Allege Document Was Fabricated

Prosecutors argued that the AI-generated court letter was not a legitimate invitation and should not be used to justify changing Cheatham’s bond conditions.

They also asked the court to increase her bond, claiming the letter showed that she was willing to submit fabricated evidence.

The district attorney’s office further alleged that the stated purpose of the Nashville trip did not match content Cheatham had posted online.

According to court records cited by prosecutors, her social media account promoted subscription-based adult-content platforms. Prosecutors claimed that her planned trip was intended to create commercial adult content rather than attend a professional development summit.

The court will ultimately decide whether the evidence is reliable and whether Cheatham should be allowed to leave Alabama.

Case Began With Forged Prescription Investigation

The criminal investigation began in August 2025 after Cullman police received reports involving allegedly forged prescriptions filled at several local pharmacies.

Authorities said the prescriptions were used to obtain various medications, including controlled narcotics.

Investigators later executed a search warrant at Infusion Wellness Spa, a business connected to Cheatham.

Arrest warrants were issued on August 15, 2025. Cheatham, who was listed as the spa’s owner, surrendered to authorities the following day.

Her father, Kelvin Neal Cheatham, also faced arrest warrants and turned himself in on September 4, 2025. A third person, Kody Ray Smith, was arrested in connection with the investigation.

Twenty Charges Filed Against Cheatham

Court documents show that Cheatham was indicted on 20 counts on December 4, 2025.

The charges include three counts of trafficking an illegal drug, four counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance and several conspiracy and attempted controlled-substance offenses.

She was also charged with practicing medicine without a license and five counts of fourth-degree forgery.

Her bond was set at approximately $1.055 million, with a condition preventing her from leaving Alabama.

The indictment represents formal accusations and does not establish guilt.

Prosecutors Describe Defendant as Flight Risk

In opposing the travel request, prosecutors highlighted the potential prison sentences connected to the trafficking charges.

They said two of the trafficking counts carry mandatory minimum sentences of 25 years in prison, while another carries a minimum sentence of 10 years.

The prosecution argued that the possibility of lengthy prison terms gave Cheatham a strong reason to flee.

They also referred to a recorded telephone conversation allegedly played during an earlier bond hearing. Prosecutors claimed Cheatham advised another person to tell her father not to surrender and allegedly said she would not return if released.

Those claims have not been proven at trial.

Previous AI Allegation Cited in Filing

The prosecution also alleged that this was not the first time Cheatham had used artificial intelligence in connection with the case.

According to court filings, prosecutors previously presented evidence that she had used ChatGPT to ask how a narcotics prescription could be forged.

The latest filing argues that the AI-generated court letter follows a similar pattern.

However, questions asked to an AI system do not independently prove that a crime was committed. Courts generally consider such material alongside other evidence, context and testimony.

Court Must Decide Bond Request

The court must now determine whether Cheatham can temporarily leave Alabama and whether her current bond should remain unchanged.

The judge may consider the seriousness of the charges, the reliability of the submitted letter, Cheatham’s previous conduct and the prosecution’s flight-risk claims.

The dispute also highlights a growing challenge for courts as AI tools make it easier to create professional-looking letters, invitations and other documents.

As artificial intelligence becomes more widely available, judges, lawyers and investigators may increasingly need to verify the source and authenticity of digital evidence before relying on it in legal proceedings.
