Claude chat privacy has come under scrutiny after hundreds of shared conversations with Anthropic’s AI assistant were found through public search engines.
The conversations included personal information, employment histories, workplace research and details linked to corporate projects. Some of the chat pages appeared in Google and other search results after users created public sharing links.
The search listings were removed over the weekend. However, copies and screenshots of some conversations continued to circulate online, renewing concerns about what happens when users share AI chats through public links.
Anthropic said people remain in control of whether they share their conversations. The company also said shared links cannot normally be discovered unless users make them publicly available.
Claude Chat Privacy Issue Involved Shared Links
The exposed conversations were not taken from private Claude accounts through a reported security breach.
Instead, they came from users who selected Claude’s sharing option and created links that other people could open.
Claude warns that anyone with a shared link can view the conversation. However, the message does not clearly explain that search engines may discover, store and display the page in public results.
This distinction may not be obvious to users.
A person may create a link intending to send it to a colleague, friend or small group. They may not realize that the same page could later appear in Google, Bing or another search engine.
Anthropic said shared conversations become publicly accessible in the same way as other public web pages and may be stored by third-party archiving services.
More Than 200 Claude Conversations Found
Reddit users reportedly identified more than 200 Claude conversations across at least 25 pages of search results.
Some of the discussions had taken place only weeks before they were discovered.
The publicly searchable conversations covered a wide range of subjects. Some were harmless or unusual questions, while others contained information that appeared personal, professional or confidential.
Several users had asked Claude for help improving résumés and CVs. Those conversations included names, contact details and employment histories.
Other chats appeared to contain research connected to users’ workplaces. One included an unpublished article about cloud security and information about a corporate project.
Some healthcare-related discussions reportedly contained transcripts of private conversations and material that may have been intended for internal use.
The availability of this information raised broader Claude chat privacy questions, particularly for people using generative AI for professional assignments.
Why Search Engines Indexed Claude Chats
Search engines regularly scan publicly accessible web pages and add them to their indexes.
This process allows people to find online information through search results. However, it can also expose content that a user believed was available only to people who had received a direct link.
Google said it does not decide which pages are made public by individual websites.
A company spokesperson said website owners can use technical controls to prevent search engines from crawling or indexing specific pages. Google said it follows those instructions when they are properly implemented.
Because Claude conversations are no longer appearing through the same searches, Anthropic may have used available indexing controls to block the shared pages from search results.
Anthropic did not publicly provide detailed information about the technical changes made.
Shared Does Not Always Mean Private
The incident highlights an important difference between a private link and a public link.

Removing a conversation from Google does not guarantee that every copy disappears.
Search engines may keep temporary versions of pages. Online archives may also store snapshots, while individuals can download, copy or screenshot the content.
Information can therefore continue circulating even after the original page is removed.

People using Claude or other AI assistants should treat public sharing links carefully.

A feature can operate exactly as designed and still create problems when its warnings do not match how ordinary users understand words such as “share” and “public.”
