UW–Madison Secures Five DOE AI Grants to Accelerate Energy and Scientific Research

DOE AI grants are helping the University of Wisconsin–Madison expand its leadership in artificial intelligence and advanced scientific research after the institution secured funding for five projects under the U.S. Department of Energy’s new Genesis Mission initiative.

The awards will support research that combines artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and scientific expertise to address major challenges in energy production, critical mineral recovery, physics, and next-generation computing. The projects are among hundreds selected nationwide during the first phase of the Department of Energy’s ambitious research program.

DOE AI Grants Back Five UW–Madison Projects

The University of Wisconsin–Madison received five Phase I awards worth between $500,000 and $750,000 each. The nine-month projects are designed to explore how artificial intelligence can accelerate scientific discovery while supporting future advances in energy, engineering, and national security.

The university earned more awards than any other public university in the United States, tying with Stanford University and trailing only the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the total number of funded projects.

The Department of Energy selected 278 projects from universities, national laboratories, companies, and nonprofit organizations following a funding opportunity announced earlier this year.

What Is the Genesis Mission?

The Genesis Mission is a Department of Energy initiative focused on combining artificial intelligence, supercomputing, quantum technologies, and advanced scientific instruments to accelerate research across multiple disciplines.

The program encourages collaboration between universities, federal laboratories, industry partners, and research institutions to develop innovative solutions for complex scientific and engineering challenges.

University leaders said the initiative reflects the growing importance of interdisciplinary partnerships in solving problems that no single institution can address alone.

AI to Advance Physics Research

One of the funded projects will explore how large-scale AI models can identify relationships across different areas of physics.

Researchers plan to investigate how machine learning can uncover previously unknown scientific connections by analyzing large datasets from multiple physics disciplines. The project brings together scientists from UW–Madison, Argonne National Laboratory, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Kentucky.

Artificial Intelligence to Improve Critical Mineral Recovery

Another project focuses on recovering copper and other critical minerals from deposits that are currently difficult or uneconomical to extract.

Researchers will develop an AI-powered framework capable of analyzing scientific literature, running simulations, comparing laboratory results, and refining predictive models. The goal is to dramatically accelerate research that traditionally requires months of analysis.

Industry collaborators from Australia and the United States are participating in the project to help translate research into practical mineral extraction technologies.

AI Supports Fusion Energy Development

Fusion energy research represents another major area receiving support through the DOE AI grants.

One research team will use artificial intelligence to process massive amounts of experimental data in real time at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in California. The technology is expected to improve plasma control, one of the most critical challenges in developing commercial fusion energy systems.

A separate project will apply AI and machine learning to optimize the design of fusion reactor breeding blankets, reducing the time required to identify more efficient reactor configurations.

Smarter Supercomputers for Artificial Intelligence

Researchers are also working to improve the efficiency of supercomputers that power modern AI applications.

The project aims to develop hardware and software solutions that reduce energy consumption while improving the performance of high-powered computing systems used in fields such as physics, chemistry, meteorology, and engineering.

Collaborators include researchers from the University of Virginia, Fermilab, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Industry Partnerships Expand Research Impact

In addition to the five university-led projects, UW–Madison researchers are participating in several other Genesis Mission initiatives through collaborations with industry.

One example involves fusion energy company Realta Fusion, a university spinout that continues to work closely with UW–Madison researchers to accelerate commercial fusion technology.

University leaders say these partnerships help move scientific discoveries beyond the laboratory and into practical applications that benefit industry and society.

AI Research Strengthens Future Innovation

University officials believe the DOE AI grants reinforce the growing role of artificial intelligence in scientific discovery.

By combining expertise across engineering, computing, physics, geoscience, and other disciplines, researchers hope to solve increasingly complex problems while training the next generation of scientists and engineers.

The projects also demonstrate how AI is becoming an essential tool for accelerating research rather than replacing scientific expertise.

Looking Ahead

The newly funded projects represent the first phase of the Genesis Mission, with researchers expected to develop new AI-powered research methods and demonstrate their effectiveness over the coming months.

Successful Phase I projects could position participating teams for future funding opportunities as the Department of Energy continues investing in artificial intelligence to advance energy security, scientific discovery, and technological innovation.

With five funded projects spanning multiple disciplines, the University of Wisconsin–Madison has strengthened its position as one of the nation’s leading institutions for AI-driven scientific research.
