The findings come as Tanzania accelerates plans to expand electricity generation and charging infrastructure to support the growing adoption of electric mobility.

According to government estimates, running an electric vehicle costs roughly 25 Tanzanian shillings per kilometre. By comparison, petrol or diesel vehicles typically cost around 200 shillings per kilometre to operate.

Lower operating expenses could make electric transport more accessible while helping households reduce spending on fuel.
Electric Vehicles Tanzania Supported by Power Expansion
The electric vehicles initiative is being supported by major investments in power generation.
The country’s electricity production capacity currently stands at about 4,500 megawatts, placing Tanzania among the leading electricity producers in East Africa.
Authorities plan to expand that capacity significantly in the coming years.
Government plans aim to increase electricity generation to approximately 8,000 megawatts by 2030. Officials say the expansion will help meet rising demand from electric vehicles and other modern technologies.
Electric Vehicles Tanzania Charging Network Planned
To make electric vehicles more practical for long-distance travel, the government plans to develop a nationwide charging network.
Charging stations will be built at key locations along major highways. This will allow drivers to recharge their vehicles during long journeys.
Officials explained that motorists traveling between major cities should be able to stop at intermediate towns to charge their vehicles before continuing their trips.
Large charging hubs capable of serving several vehicles at once are also expected to be developed.
Private investors entering the electric mobility sector are being encouraged to install their own charging infrastructure as well.
Electric Vehicles Tanzania Market Already Growing
The electric vehicles market is already expanding as the technology gains popularity across Africa.
More than 30,000 electric vehicles are currently operating across the continent. East Africa is emerging as a key center for innovation in electric mobility.
In Tanzania alone, estimates suggest that more than 10,000 electric vehicles are already in use. Many of these include motorcycles and other small transport options widely used in urban areas.
Electric Vehicles Tanzania Could Boost Jobs
Industry leaders say the electric vehicles initiative could also create new employment opportunities.
Some companies plan to start by importing fully built electric vehicles before gradually introducing partially assembled units. Eventually, the goal is to establish local assembly plants.
Such investments could help train young people in modern automotive technologies while strengthening the country’s manufacturing sector.
As electric mobility continues expanding worldwide, Tanzania aims to position itself as an emerging hub for clean transport and sustainable energy development.
