Amazon is making its Fire TV platform considerably smarter by bringing its generative AI-powered Alexa+ assistant deeper into the television experience. For eligible users, the Alexa Plus upgrade turns the familiar voice assistant into something much more conversational, helping viewers find movies, get recommendations, control smart home devices and even jump directly to particular moments in films.
The biggest attraction is the price for Amazon Prime members. In the US, Amazon includes unlimited Alexa+ access with Prime at no additional charge, covering compatible Alexa-enabled devices as well as the Alexa app and Alexa.com.
For Fire TV owners, this means the television is becoming less dependent on menus, search boxes and endless scrolling.
What the Alexa Plus upgrade brings to Fire TV
Alexa has been part of Fire TV for years, but Alexa+ is designed to understand normal conversation rather than relying so heavily on specific commands.
A viewer can describe what they feel like watching, mention an actor or director, or ask for something suitable for a particular occasion. Alexa+ can then use that context to recommend entertainment.
Amazon says Alexa+ is available throughout its redesigned Fire TV experience and can help users find content, add titles to watchlists, check sports statistics, manage compatible smart home equipment and generate personalized recommendations.

Alexa Plus upgrade can find specific movie scenes
One of the more unusual Alexa+ features on Fire TV is its ability to take viewers directly to particular scenes in movies.
Rather than manually moving through a film, users can describe the scene they remember. Alexa+ attempts to identify both the movie and the correct moment before opening it through Prime Video.
Amazon says the technology can understand information including characters, scene descriptions and memorable dialogue. The company says the feature already works across thousands of Prime Video movies and tens of thousands of indexed scenes.
It is a good example of why Amazon is putting generative AI directly into the Fire TV experience. Traditional voice search works well when you know a title. Generative AI becomes more useful when you only remember fragments.
Amazon also plans to expand the scene-search capability to more content over time.
Fire TV itself has received a major redesign
Alexa+ is arriving alongside broader changes to Fire TV.
Amazon introduced a redesigned interface in 2026 aimed at making navigation cleaner and faster. As of June 22, 2026, the company said the new interface was shipping globally on current-generation Fire TV Sticks, Fire TV Cube devices and Amazon Ember smart TVs.
The home screen has been reorganized to make apps and content easier to reach, while a shortcut panel provides faster access to commonly used controls.
Amazon has also rewritten parts of the underlying Fire TV software. According to the company, the changes can deliver performance improvements of up to 20% to 30% in some situations on existing hardware. The redesigned interface itself is distributed as a free software update.
That matters because users do not necessarily need to buy a new streaming stick just to see many of the improvements.
Is the Alexa Plus upgrade really free?
There is an important distinction.
For Amazon Prime members in the US, full Alexa+ access is included with their membership at no additional charge. Amazon officially opened Alexa+ to all US Prime members in February 2026.
People without Prime can subscribe to the full Alexa+ service for $19.99 per month in the US. Amazon also offers a limited free Alexa+ chat experience for non-Prime customers, but that free tier is accessed through Alexa.com and the Alexa mobile app rather than providing the full Alexa+ experience on Fire TV hardware.
So describing the Fire TV Alexa Plus upgrade as “free” is most accurate for Prime members.
Availability can also vary by country, meaning Fire TV owners outside supported Alexa+ markets may receive other Fire TV software improvements before Alexa+ becomes fully available in their region.
