Israel has received a coffin containing the remains of one of the last two deceased hostages from Gaza, as reported by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). The handover of the body came after an investigation found that the remains of the other deceased hostage did not match the expected DNA. This significant event adds to the ongoing efforts to recover bodies and further underscores the impact of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel.
Transfer of Remains and Ongoing Investigation
Israel hostage body transfer,On December 3, 2025, Israel’s prime minister’s office confirmed the delivery of the body through the Red Cross. The body is set to undergo identification at Israel’s National Institute of Forensic Medicine in Tel Aviv. This action marks another chapter in the Israel-Gaza negotiations and continues efforts under the US-brokered ceasefire agreement that started in October 2025.
Background of the Hostages and the Ceasefire Deal
Among the two hostages are Ran Gvili, a 24-year-old Israeli police officer, and Suthisak Rintalak, a 43-year-old Thai agricultural worker. Both men were taken by Hamas during the brutal October attack. The ceasefire agreement stipulated the return of 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 deceased hostages, which includes foreign nationals. Since then, Israel has successfully received 23 Israeli hostages’ remains and three foreign nationals, including Thai, Nepalese, and Tanzanian citizens.
Controversy Surrounding the Delay and Political Reactions
Despite the progress, the slow recovery of the hostages’ bodies has sparked criticism. Israel accuses Hamas of delaying the process, while Hamas insists it struggles to locate the bodies amid the rubble in Gaza. The issue has garnered mixed reactions from both Israeli and international officials, as it affects broader diplomatic negotiations regarding Gaza’s future.
The transfer of the body from Gaza symbolizes a step forward in the tragic saga of the hostages taken by Hamas, but it also raises ongoing concerns about the delays and complexities of the recovery process. As investigations continue, the focus now shifts to the fate of the remaining missing victims and the broader political implications of the Gaza conflict.
