In a bid to hasten the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Seoul has announced an expansion of its electric vehicle subsidies. The new measures will provide additional city-funded support on top of existing national incentives, making it easier for residents to switch from traditional gasoline or diesel cars to electric models.
Expanded EV Incentives and Subsidy Increases
The Seoul Metropolitan Government is offering an extra 300,000 won ($203) for those replacing gasoline or diesel cars with electric models, in addition to the 1 million won subsidy from the central government. This initiative is part of the city’s plan to support 22,526 electric vehicle purchases in 2026, a notable increase from the 19,081 vehicles subsidized in 2025. The bulk of these subsidies—22,409 vehicles—will be allocated to private consumers, while 117 vehicles will be directed towards public institutions.
High-Value Subsidies for Electric Cars and Trucks
Electric passenger vehicles can receive subsidies up to 7.54 million won, with additional incentives of up to 1.3 million won for those who scrap their internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Buyers in low-income households, first-time young buyers, and families with multiple children will receive additional support. For electric taxis, a special subsidy of 2.5 million won is available, with even more incentives for vehicles featuring extended battery warranties.
Increased Support for Electric Cargo and Public Transport Vehicles
The city is also broadening its support to include medium- and large-sized electric cargo trucks. These vehicles will be eligible for subsidies of up to 78 million won. Subsidies for electric buses and school buses remain among the highest, with funding reaching up to 150 million won, depending on the vehicle size.
Application Process and Deadlines
Applications for these subsidies will begin on January 26 through the national zero-emission vehicle portal, which will handle the distribution of funds. This expansion of incentives demonstrates Seoul’s commitment to green mobility and supporting the shift toward more sustainable transportation options.
With increased incentives, Seoul is paving the way for greater adoption of electric vehicles, helping to combat pollution and promote sustainable urban mobility. These expanded subsidies are part of a broader effort to lead South Korea toward a greener future, aligning with global trends toward environmental responsibility and innovation in the automotive sector.
